20. The Mysterious Case of the Missing Cat

“Home sweet home,” purred the cat,

cozy by the fire.

“Home sweet home,” said the man,

petting the cat by the fire.

Mandy-Lynn awoke in her own bed—the bed she had never ever wanted to lie on ever again. The bed she would have burnt to a crisp if she’d been strong enough to haul it outside, and if there had been no assassins lying in wait. Now she probably had Dwight and Chrissy-Lee cooties.

She had a hazy memory of getting her ear shot off, and Cappy running away, and then … nothing. How had she gotten to bed? Had Lawson carried her there like a swooning maiden? Or had Donna hijacked her body and seduced Lawson? He was a guy after all, so he was unlikely to refuse sex if it was offered to him, no strings attached.

She turned her head slowly, relieved to find herself alone, because if there had been some fabulous sex, she wouldn’t have remembered it. She seemed to have a touch of amnesia.

Someone had made her bed with fresh linens and tucked her in. She peeked under the covers. She was still wearing her comfy sweats. Further confirmation that there had been no fabulous sex, or any sex at all.

She sat up and felt only slightly hungover. She touched her ear, and was relieved to find it still on the side of her head where it belonged. It hadn’t been shot off after all, although there was a deep groove near the top, like a chunk was missing. A glance at her clock showed it to be seven-thirty. She rose and crossed the room to her bedroom door, which was closed. She opened it, hoping Cappy would trot in. He didn’t. There was no sign of him, but she could hear someone moving quietly around in the kitchen.

Mandy-Lynn slipped into the bathroom, which she needed rather desperately. After she felt very relieved, she risked a glance in the mirror, confirming that a little V-shaped chunk of her ear was gone, right near the top, yet it didn’t look too bad, all things considered. Some people opted to have big gaping droopy holes in their ears, by choice. The notch in her ear was quite dashing in comparison.

Her hair was another matter entirely. It looked worse in the light of day. The sickly whitish colour was simply hideous, and there was a fair bit of dried blood in it, from her ear. The red really showed up on the white. She had to get another box of hair dye, or better yet, go back to the salon for some serious damage control. She would have examined her wound more thoroughly, except she didn’t want to get scolded by the mirror for almost dying again. And she did not want to look at her awful hair. She bent down and rinsed the blood out, as best she could, at the sink.

She was towel drying the wet side of her head when her reflection sparked and flickered, and Donna appeared.
